Supporting The Manu O Ke Kai
Canoe Club
Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club
The Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club is for kama’aina of all ages who wish to experience outrigger canoeing. The club emphasizes perpetuating Hawaiian culture and values through canoe paddling. Kai represents life. Our ancestors traveled on water, went to war on water, and gathered their food from the water. Outrigger canoes connect us to our past, where knowledge and respect were passed down from generation to generation.More than paddling
One of our core values is respect. Our ownership team comes from a range of backgrounds, but the idea of respect is central to each of them. We have always found that the best way to foster respect between people is to spend time together. Respect grows as we get to know each other and work towards common goals.
The canoe club brings people together from all walks of life and all ages. Entire families participate, from the keiki to kupuna. They compete together and celebrate together. They learn how to build, bless, and malama the canoes. Along the way, they discover the value of each person they work with.
Not just financial support
Dave Fuga, one of the KT Protection Services owners, fell in love with paddling in his early twenties. During his time spent with the club, he and KT Protection stepped in when financial support was needed. They also provide security at big competitions.
Beyond that, Dave has become president of the club. In this role, he is responsible for tracking finances, and scheduling. He has to recruit new members and develop new coaches. He also has to support the current coaching staff and membership. With over 300 members, this keeps him busy, but he loves it.

As a boss in an organization, you expect your employees to do what you ask them to do. That’s what they get paid for. But in a volunteer organization, management has a different layer. A volunteer can walk away at any time. They have already put in long hours at a job of their own. Understanding their needs and desires is a central part of moving the club forward.“The way we build culture is through food and talking story. Getting together at or after functions, celebrating is more important than training to win races. Not everyone is a super athlete, but they all bring something to the table. People make connections and learn the culture. You attract those types of people. “ -Dave Fuga
That’s a lesson Dave has taken back to KT Protection Services. It goes back to respect and relationships. Recognizing that his employees have needs and aspirations outside of work has helped him improve his management abilities. In the security industry, there is a lot of turnover. By creating a caring and respectful environment where managers support their workers and workers respect their clients and managers, KT has been able to reduce turnover. Their staff is also happier and more productive on the job. The Man O Ke Kai Canoe Club makes the lives of its members better. It makes KT Protection Services better, too.Recent blogs
